During his 25 years of imprisonment in England, Charles d’Orléans (1394-1465) composed over 500 love poems and political verses in both English and in French, which were widely circulated during his lifetime. The life and work of Charles of Orléans still continued to inspire artists years later: Claude Debussy set three of his poems to music and Henri Matisse made illustrations to accompany them. The Dutch author Hella Haasse wrote a historical novel titled “Het woud der verwachting” about the life of Charles of Orléans, named after one of his poems. Some of his poems have also been translated into Dutch, including by J.H. Leopold and Ernst van Altena.
