Rare Dutch translation. Full title: Phedon (Phaedon) of over de onsterflykheid der Ziele, in drie t’zamenspraaken door Moses Mendelszoon. Naar den tweeden verbeterden druk, uit het Hoogduitsch vertaald, in ‘s Graavenhaage, by Pieter van Cleef, MDCCLXIX. Half leather binding with damages. Interior with some browning but further in good condition. With engraving of Socrates in prison with skull and butterfly made by Polak (at right bottom Polak. sculp.).First edition in German published in 1767. The book has been translated in English and Dutch. This is the rare Dutch version. The book is modeled on Plato’s dialog of the same name and deals with the life of Socrates in a witty and very readible way. Phaedon was an immediate succes, Mendelssohn was referred to as the German Plato or the German Socrates. Mendelssohn was a German-Jewish philosopher. In this book Moses Mendelssohn emancipates the German jews. A treatise on the immortality of the soul. Mendelssohn was advocate of the Jewish Enlightment, the Haskalah.
[NL] Moses Mendelssohn (1729-1786) was een Duits-Joods filosoof tijdens de Verlichting. Hij was voortrekker van de Joodse Verlichting, de Haskala. Grootvader van de componist Mendelssohn. Wordt ook wel aangeduid als Gastarbeider en vader van de Duitse verlichting. Met prent, gravure, van Socrates in de gevangenis met op de tafel een schedel als symbool voor de dood. Pieter van Cleef was boekhandelaar en uitgever in Den Haag.
