Hulk (fl. 18th century)

Two images in one plate from the “Histoire naturelle…” by George-Louis Leclerc Comte de Buffon, published in Amsterdam by Schneider.
On the left ‘Le signe lion’ and on the right ‘Guenon à face pourpre.’ namely a Golden lion tamarin and a Red-eared guenon. Both signed by Hulk at bottom right: “Hulk Sculp.”

A Large watermark in the middle of the hand-laid paper: ‘C&I HONIG’, the Dutch papermill founded by Cornelis (1683-1755) and Jan Honig (1688-1757).

Etching on light blue paper with broad margins; plate mark: 212 x 386 mm; total: 294 x 493 mm. In great condition despite some tears and foldings on the very external margins and minor light staining. Fold in the middle.
