[Original etching] Landscape near Edinburgh [set of small horizontal Scottish views], ca 1740-1765.

Landscape near Edinburgh: on the left, between a cliff-face and trees, a man leading a laden horse around a bend in a path towards the viewer, men and women to right, an overgrown ruined building with a round tower behind them and a bridge across a river and a church at the foot of a mountain in the distance. From a set of various landscapes by Sandby. According to a note in the catalogue of the British Museum [see inv. 1850,1014.538], the impressions on laid paper in brown ink are generally early states than those impressed on china and thin paper. As a matter of fact, the tree in the middle is very sharp, whereas the other characters around are quite vague, which might indicate that the artist was still working on details between an impression and the other.

Etching on laid paper in brown ink; total: 176 x 223 mm; on the top margin three regions in which the paper is thinner due to the removal of previous mounting; some rubbing in the front, especially in the sky, otherwise very nice impression.
