Meyssens, Joannes (1612-1670), Theodor van Kessel (ca. 1620-1660), after Johannes Popels (ca. 1600-1664)

[Antique print, engraving/gravure] Portrait of Jacob Stoopius, published ca. 1630-1660.

Half-length portrait of Jacob Stoopius, leaning against a column, bust towards the viewer and gaze towards the sky.

Stoopius was a merchant and a calligrapher in Antwerp.

The name of the portrayed is written out in nice calligraphy: “Jacob Stoopius / Gandensis Antverpia Mercator Calographiae / admirator. Amator fautor eximius”. Signed below: “Ioannes Meyssens excudit / J Popels pinxit”.

Engraving on paper, trimmed to plate mark; total: 277 x 191 mm; state II/2; cooked paper on the margins, resulting in a yellowing surface, probably due to sun exposure under an unfit passepartout. Light foxing especially on verso, otherwise interesting impression. Paper with watermark. Hollstein 135, Wurzbach 2, Atlas v. Som 4286.
