Portrait of Hendrik Liberti, organist in Groningen and Antwerp. Hendrik Liberti, organist of the Cathedral of Antwerp, was a special friend of van Dyck’s. Possibly an original study for the painting, of which several versions exist, in Munich, Madrid and in the collection of the Duke of Grafton.
Half-length, body turned towards the observer, head towards left. In his hand a sheet of paper with a canon for four voices on the words: ‘Ars Longa / Vita Brevis’. Inscribed at bottom: ‘HENRICVS LIBERTI / GROENINGENSIS CATHED. ECCLESIAE ANTVERP. ORGANISTA’ signed at bottom: ‘Anton van Dijck pinxit / Petrus de Iode sculpsit’. Date of publishing 1657.
Engraving on paper, trimmed within plate mark, pasted down on cardboard with annotations on verso in pencil; total: 271 x 199 mm; state IV/5; in good condition. New Hollstein (van Dyck) 144.
