Wijnand Otto Nieuwenkamp (1874-1950)

[Modern print, etching] “Les peupliers blancs” with a view of Haarlem (witte populieren bij Haarlem), dated 1910.

Artist’s proof of an intense etching, representing the white poplars in the outskirts of Haarlem.

This print is particularly fascinating because it is printed on Japanese paper. The tone of the paper is slightly yellowing, but the fine lines describing the tree, the ground and the landscape towards the back are simply poetic.

Monogrammed on the bottom left: ‘W.O.J.N.’. On the lower margin in pencil some annotations concerning the literature and, again, the maker: ‘E 50’ (Hubert), ‘Les peupliers blancs / Haarlem / Hollande’ and on the right: ‘Epreuve d’artiste 1910 / W.O.J. Nieuwenkamp’.

On verso undescribed collector’s mark.

Etching on Japanese paper, proof; plate mark: 347 x 274 mm, total: 375 x 307 mm. Extremely beautiful impression. On verso three drops not affecting the other side.
