The Virgin Mary seated, with hands crossed on her lap. She is crying and in front of her on the ground, towards the right are the tools that were used to torture her son: the pins and the crown of thorns. Behind her a landscape with a view on a fortified construction.

Titled below, with a passage from the Gospel of Luke (Lucas): ‘Une espée percera ta propre ame.’

[NL] Treurende Maria. Maria, huilend en met gevouwen handen, zit tegen de onderkant van het kruis van Christus. Bij haar voeten liggen passiewerktuigen: een nijptang, spijkers en de doornenkroon. Op de achtergrond een stadmuur.
