Full contemporary vellum binding, overlapping edges, octavo edition, Titlepage a bit loose at the bottom, therefore visible as fortification of the spine: some parchment manuscript maculatur, binder’s waste, recycled manuscript fragments. Elsevier’s woodcut printer’s mark on the title, depicting an old man standing in the shade of a vine-entwined elmtree, symbolising the symbiotic relationship between scholar and publisher. First Elzevir edition of the poems of Daniel Heinsius including his didactic epic Decontemptu mortis, on facing death with courage. Heinsius’ Decontemptu mortis was first published in quarto in the same year and is here included among his poems for the first time. In four books and over two thousand lines of hexameter, Decontemptu mortis mingles Classical and Christian thought on the subject of death, from Plato’s philosophy in the first book to Christ’s victory over death and the martyrs freed.
