Holy Family with St. John (Life of the Virgin; series); 1593
Sixth plate from the series: The Life of the Virgin. The Holy Family (Joseph, standing in the back, Mary, seated in the foreground with baby Jesus in her lap) with John the Baptist as a child. Jesus reaches out to touch St. John’s cheek. A basket with Mary’s linens and a scissor are in the right foreground, while to the left of Mary is a vase with lilies. A cat has just caught a small bird on the windowsill on the far left of the image. Lettered below in Latin: ‘[PRA]ECURSOR DOMINI LACTANTIS AB UBERE MATRIS / [BLAN]DITUR PUERO PUER, ET COLLUDIT AMICE, / QUEM PRAECOGNOVIT SALIENS UTERO ABDITUS, HUNC ET / INDICE MONSTRAVIT DIGITO CRESCENTIBUS ANNIS’. Monogrammed and dated bottom left ‘HG/1593’.
Very rare engraving on paper pasted on thicker paper; trimmed on platemark; total: 478 x 354 mm; bottom left corner cut out; damages along the borders and a repaired tear on the forehead of the Virgin; state II or III/3 (nr. ‘6’ identifying the third state was perhaps included in the missing corner).
