Latin text by scientist Macrobius about Greek and Latin language, astronomy, math etc. Full contemporary vellum binding with blindstamped coat of arms of the city of Nijmegen (Noviomagum) on the front and back. Drawstrings missing. Beautiful engraved frontispice with a small tear in the right bottom corner (no text or paper loss). Engraving with astronomical and cosmological elements, symbols of the planets Saturn, jupiter, mars, sun, venus, mercury and moon, representing the classical seven planets known in antiquity. This aligns with Macrobius’ discussion of celestial pheres and planetary influences. The sun and Moon with human faces suggest a connection btween humans and celestial forces. A large globe on the left depicting constellations emphasizes the astronomical knowledge that Macrobius discusses. With reference to Scipio. Published in Leiden. Octavo edition, in -8. [NL] Belangrijke uitgave van de werken van de Romeinse schrijver Macrobius door de (Leidse) geleerden Gronovius, Jacob Pontanus, Johanns van Meurs uit 1670. Macrobius’ commentaar op Cicero’s Somnium Scipionis was van grote invloed voor de middeleeuwse kosmologie en filosofie. Met onder meer: Commentarii in Somnium Scipionis (een diepgaande analyse van Cicero’s droomvisioen), Saturnalia (een verzameling geleerde discussies over mythologie en cultuur), De Differentiis et Societatibus Graeci Latinique Verbi (over taalkundige verschillen tussen Grieks en Latijn). Ook tekst in het Grieks. Meeste tekst in Latijn. Jacobus Gronovius, ook wel Jacob Gronow (1645-1716) was een Nederlandse filoloog. Zoon van Johann Friedrich (Joannes Fredericus) Gronovius (1611-1671), een vooraanstaande Duits-Nederlandse classicus. Hoogleraar aan de Universiteit Leiden en bibliothecaris van de universiteit. Macrobius was een belangrijke bron voor middeleeuwse geleerden, zijn werken over mythologie, astronomie en wiskunde zijn waardevol gebleken.
