The Castell or Counts of Castell are a Franconian noble family and ruled the county of Castell, an imperial county in the Franconian Empire, from 1202 to 1806. As counts who formerly ruled directly in the Holy Roman Empire and later titular princes of Bavaria, they therefore belong to the high nobility. The two main lines still own the family estates of the former sub-counties of Castell and Rüdenhausen in Lower Franconia. The Castell family’s ownership history can probably be traced back to the East Franconian Mattonen family. The Castell family owns the oldest private bank in Bavaria and one of the oldest German wineries. It probably appeared in documents as early as March 3, 1057 with “Rupert” (Rupert) and from 1091 it was called “de Castello” after the ancestral seat. In 1202/5 the family was elevated to the status of imperial count.
