History of France during the wars of religion, written by historian Charles de Lacretelle (1766-1855). Monumental work tracing the religious conflicts that tore France apart between 1562 and 1598, pitting Catholics against Protestants (Huguenots), culminating in the Edict of Nantes. Lacretelle adopts a rigorous narrative method, drawing on a variety of sources such as correspondence, official documents, and contemporary testimonies. He details the major events of this period, including the St. Bartholomew’s Day Massacre, the eight Wars of Religion, the role of key figures such as Catherine de’ Medici, the Dukes of Guise, and Henry of Navarre (the future Henry IV), as well as the political and social implications of these conflicts. Lacretelle’s work is noted for its clarity and lack of bias, offering a balanced analysis of the events.
Charles de Lacretelle, also known as Lacretelle the Younger, was a French lawyer, journalist, and historian. He began his career by reporting the debates of the National Assembly in the Journal des débats . Due to his royalist sympathies, he was imprisoned from 1797 to 1799. A member of the French Academy since 1811, he taught history at the Sorbonne and is considered one of the pioneers in the historical study of the French Revolution.
