Famous schoolbook in the 17th century by Roman historian Florus. Short overview of Roman military history. Epitome Rerum Romanum is often used for the work of Florus as it is a retoric short summary of the Roman History. Text in Latin.

Full vellum binding, ocatavo edition, 8vo. Prizebinding, without the prize. 6 thongs laced through both joints. Blind stamped coat of arms of the city of Zaltbommel on the front and the back, Zalt Boemel, Zaltboemel. On the back loss of the vellum around the bottom of the coat of arms (due to animals). Also loss of vellum on the spine. All 4 textile fastening ties gone. Pages slightly worn, titlepage missing a small piece of the right bottom corner.

Boards with blind double fillet borders, in the center of them the coat of arms of the city of Zaltbommel. Engraved titlepage depicting a throned goddess Roma on a pedestal, allegorical figures, representing Europe, Asia and Africa (black woman) offer her their treasures; in the foreground Tibur, and little Romulus and Remus and their shewolf). Edition written by L.A. Florus, annotated by C. Salmasius and enlarged by R. Hermannides.

Verkorte weergave van de Romeinse geschiedenis met bijzondere aandacht voor de oorlogen die tot aan de tijd van Augustus zijn gevoerd. Florus slaagt erin een beknopt overzicht te geven van de Romeinse militaire geschiedenis. Dit is de zogenaamde ‘Variorum-editie. ‘textus receptus’ met commentaar en annotaties van specialisten. geanoteerd door Claudius Salmasius en vermeerderd door Rutger Hermannides, 17e eeuwse historicus en cartograaf bekend van zijn werk Britannia Magna. Claude Saumaise (Claudius Salmasius 1588-1653) was Franse filoloog en classicus met diepgaande kennis van Latijn, Grieks en Hebreeuws. In 1631 werd hij hoogleraar klassieke talen van de Universiteit Leiden waar hij Joseph Scaliger opvolgde.
