This beautiful emblem book by Van der Veen is followed by his popular songs in the end of the book. Many reprints are in smaller sizes therefore the plates in these later editions are of less quality. These first edition plates are very beautiful and this edition is the only one with French and Dutch couplets. The illustrations on p. 86 and 98 were unjustly atrributed to Rembrandt.
Plate XIV is still the original plate, not changed with a new pasted in plate as many first editions have. The plate is a duplicatie from plate IX.
