Contemporary full calf leather with gilt ornamented spine and covers, and red morocco title shield. Both hinges partly broken. 4o: [2], xxxii, 304, [2], 305-310 pp. With engraved portrait on the titlepage by W. Bollinger, and 11 folding engraved plates. Good copy with a manuscript dedication. First edition of Chladni’s pioneer work which established the science of acoustics. The first complete historical text on the subject, this text extended his earlier observations (1787) to include vibrating ellipses, semicircles, triangles and six-sided polygons. This copy of Chladni’s masterpiece was a present given in 1812 to the Haarlem schoolmaster P.J. Prinsen by a pupil’s father, Carl Gottfried Voorhelm Schneevoogt. B0141.

Fascinated by the phenomenon of sound, Chladni is famous for the Chladni plates. He estimated the speed of sound and made a famous study of the vibrations of surfaces by observing the patterns created by sound waves on sand-covered plates. Chladni is often called the “Father of Acoustics”. Later he extended his observations to ellipses, semicircles, triangles, and six-sided polygons.
