[De Witt, 1906-1919, Complete Set of 6] Brieven van Johan de Witt (4 vols.) and Brieven aan Johan de Witt (2 vols.), Amsterdam: J. Müller, 1906-1919, (6 volumes)
Six-volume edition edited by R. Fruin, N. Japikse and G.W. Kernkamp, Letters to and Letters from Johan de Witt . Formerly in the collection of Jhr. W. Roëll.
As a grand pensionary, Johan de Witt wrote and received an extraordinary number of letters. His correspondence is extremely varied and includes letters from important statesmen, foreign office holders, army commanders, scientists, artists, family members, and numerous requests for commendation. By far the majority of letters were written in the period 1653-1672, with a smaller portion dating from before 1653. After his death his personal archive was transferred to the state and is now kept at the Nationaal Archief in The Hague: inventaris Raadpensionaris De Witt, 3.01.17.
The murder of the De Witt brothers is considered one of the most memorable and shameful events in Dutch history. Rumors and false accusations created an uproar, which led to an attack on Johan and Cornelis de Witt on June 21, 1672, and finally to the assassination and subsequent wave of violence on August 20.
