First edition of the translation by Vondel of the tragedy ‘Phoenissae’ by the Greek author Euripides (ca. 480 – 406 BC) (over de Phoeniciers, Feniciers). Vondel based his translation on the translation in Latin by Hugo de Groot in 1630. The play is dedicated to the Mayors of Amsterdam: Lambert Reins, Cornelis van Plooswyck, Cornelis de Vlaming van Outshoren and Gilis Valkenier.

Joost van den Vondel (1587 – 1679) was a Dutch poet and play writer. He is considered to be the most prominent Dutch author of the 17^th century. He taught himself to read Greek and Latin to better understand the classical literature.ZKL0063
