Translation of the tragedy ‘Electra’ by the Greek tragedian Sophocles (496 – 406 BC) by Vondel. He probably wrote more than 120 pieces, but only seven survived the time. Sophocles was of great influence on the progress of theatre. He increased the number of people in the choir from twelve to fifteen and he introduced a third actor. He was also the first one to use painted backdrops. In his play and, the intrigue was much more complex than in the plays of his predecessors. On the dramatic climax, he introduced the ‘peripeteia’ or sudden reversal, which is still used in plays nowadays.
The first edition of this translation by Vondel appeared in 1639 at Dirk Cornelisz. Houthaeck. Vondel (1587 – 1679) dedicated this translation to Maria Tesselschade Roemers Visscher (1594 – 1649), who was a member of the literary circle surrounding P.C. Hooft.

The Ex Libris has the name Ernst Lampe on it. This is most likely Ernst Lampe, the German mathematician and physicist, who taught in Eisenberg.
