Nice bookshaped object, hidden box for jewellery or smaller books. In this case the small miniature book (8,5 x 5,5 cm) Aucassin and Nicolette , Siegle Hill & Co London is inserted and comes with the box. 107 pages with a love story, without title page. Printed by Siegle, Hill & Co, 2 Langham Place London W. Guilt edges, spine missing.
The bookshaped calf box is early 18th century, gilt spine with text on the above red shield: Examen General. The second shield misses half of the text. Size of the book: 17 x 10 cm. Size of the box: 13,5 x 7 cm. 5 raised bands, Octavo edition, in -8. Wear on the edges of the binding, hinges weak. Marbled endpapers.

Provenance: On the flyleaf the contemporary handwritten names: J.F. Gaune Cangy 1737 and Jean Francois Gauné Cangy 1738. This could be Jean Francois Gaune de Cagny who was born in 1721 in Joigny, Saint-thibault, Yonne, France. Curé of Saint-Maurice in Montereau-Fault-Yonne between 1761 and 1769, then honorary canon. He died in 1769, his mother was Marie Edmée Jacquinet and his father was Ignace dit “de Cangy” Gauné. The flyleaf is missing the top corner.
