Fine red crushed morocco binding by the famous Frieda Thiersch (stamp-signed on rear turn-in). 29,5 x 20 cm. Covers with double gilt fillet border, riased bands, double gilt-ruled compartments, gilt titling, all edges gilt. In a matching morocco-lipped marbled paper slipcase. Some pages with light waterstains on the top but further in great condition. Frieda Thiersch was the principal bookbinder of the Bremer Press and very famous for her fabulous binding skills. Her name is in the binding at the back. The books she bound with her own hands bear her full name (as here), the books bound by her workers under her supervision were signed with her initials instead. When the Bremer Press had to close in 1934 and she had to search for other employmnet. The Nazi party was attracted to Thiersch’s work by her international reputation and she became the main bookbinder for the Nazi party and Hitler himself.

Frieda Thiersch (1889-1947) is a famous German female Art bookbinder, cover designer and graphic artist who worked in the period of the German book art movement after the First World War. As head of the Bremen bindery she was responsible for the design and execution of almost all the covers of the Bremen press.
