Frontispiece to Thomas Salmon’s “Hedendaagsche historie, of Tegenwoordige staat van America.”

The seafaring personified shows a globe to a feathered man holding a cornucopia. In the foreground is a putto with the attributes of Mercury, with the portrait of Columbus in his hand. On the right, a putto with a Spanish flag. In the bottom margin a five-line Dutch text.

Signed and dated at bottom left: J.C. Philips inv. et fecit.

With date and address of the publisher below: Te Amsterdam by Isaak Tirion, 1765.

[NL] De gepersonifieerde Zeevaart toont een wereldbol aan een man met verentooi die een hoorn des overvloeds vasthoudt. Op de voorgrond een putto in de gedaante van Mercurius, met in de hand het portret van Columbus. Daarnaast een putto met een Spaanse vlag. In de ondermarge een vijfregelige Nederlandse tekst.
