Personification of Judea, seated on the body of a priest and on a pile of idols, looking at an angel offering her an olive branch, and at another symbolizing Vengence and threatening her with a burning sword; at top left sits Justice; in the distance, the Temple of Jerusalem, burning.

Frontispiece to an unidentified edition of Prideaux’s ‘Histoire Des Juifs et Des Peuples Voisins’ (Amsterdam, 1722, or 1728 ?).

[NL] De personificatie van het veroverde Judea kijkt op naar de hemel. Ze is omringd door attributen die afkomstig zijn uit de verwoeste tempels van Jeruzalem. Ze zit op een dode priester, voor haar ligt een naakte vrouw wier lichaam doorboord is met een dolk. In de lucht vliegt de wraakengel, een vlammend zwaard in de hand. Vrede (Pax) wijst haar op Rechtvaardigheid in de hemel. Op de achtergrond de tempel te Jeruzalem, die in vlammen opgaat. In de marge een zesregelig onderschrift in het Frans.
