Delaune, Etienne (1518-1595)

First engraving from the suite of 12 entitled ‘Première Suite des Mois de l’Année’ with an allegory of the month of January. The frame is decorated with elements reminding of this month especially the medaillon at the top center with the double headed Janus. Within the representation in the sky to the left the zodiacal sign of Aquarius characterizing this month. To the right an interior with a couple eating at a table in front of a fireplace. On the opposite side of the table are standing masked figures. From a terrace above them two musicians. To the left a woman is breaking the ice on the surface of a river with a stick and more towards the background a man is finding comfort in front of a bonfire whereas other two are rescuing a third man who fell on the slippery ice. Inscription on the bottom on cartouche: ‘Jano quum tristis facies tamen intro receptus / Ignis naturae, luculentas concoquit escas / Cum pri / Regis / S’.

Engraving on paper, trimmed within platemark; total: 174 x 237 mm. State I/2 before plate numbering, two tiny holes on the right part.
