Bird’s-eye view of Deshima (or Dejima) in Japan. In the text: Na de aftekening, onder den Heere Voogt betreffende, opgestelt, so copied from a manuscript by Voogt, who was second-in-command on Deshima in 1713.

The island is viewed from the landside, depicting the developments of the new warehouses and the garden as well as the famous ‘speelhuis’ which contained a billiard (biljard) table and musical instruments on the upper floor and which proved such an attraction to the locals and officials. This place was an important trading post for the V.O.C. This print originates from ‘Hedendaagsche Historie of Tegenwoordige Staat van Alle Volkeren’ by T. Salmon. Published by Isaak Tirion, a Dutch publisher in Amsterdam, born in 1705.
