[Antique print, frontispiece, etching and engraving] Allegorical frontispiece with History writing on an open book, published 1749.

The personification of History is writing the history of the Netherlands on her book. She is talking to an allegorical female figure, with wings on her head. Next to her are Strength, in armor, and Freedom with her lance in hand. Behind them are soldiers. In the right foreground a lion surrounded by three putti, and various religious attributes. In the air, Father Time pushes aside a drapery.

Used as the frontispiece for Jan Wagenaar’s “Vaderlandsche historie, vervattende de geschiedenissen der nu Vereenigde Nederlanden, inzonderheid die van Holland (…).” published in Amsterdam by Isaak Tirion, in 1749.

Signed on the bottom left: “J. Punt inv. et fecit.”. Handwritten annotations on verso, in pen and black ink, from the nineteenth century.

Etching and engraving on paper, with margins; plate mark: 187 x 116 mm, total: 220 x 135 mm; in very good condition.
