Portrait of Jacob Spex (1704-1775) in an oval medallion held by a muse crowned with laurel.

The muse is also holding a sheet of paper on which is reported the title of the collection for which this frontispiece was made, and a lyre. On the right of the potrait more instruments such as a panpipe and another wind instrument. On the background to the right a curtain.

Signed on the bottom: ‘A. Schouman del. / P.G. van Balen exc. / J. Houbraken sculps’.

On the verso collector’s marks: Gemeente Museum of The Hague (L. 1096) and another unidentified mark.

Engraving on paper with margins; plate mark 185 x 121 mm, total: 225 x 158 mm; light foxing throughout the paper and traces of previous mounting on the verso.
