Landscape with a woman on a donkey, followed by a man walking with his dog.

There is no site between Bologna and Florence called Acqua Negra. Such a place (Acquanegra sul Chiese) is located more to the North-West, between Cremona and Mantova.

From a set of four (upright) Italian landscapes. This beautiful wooded view – also in its counterpart – served as inspiration for drawings and paintings by fellow painters, also from later generations. See Bout’s landscape with travellers set at auction by Sotheby’s London the 30.10.2003 (lot. 85 as attributed to Hans de Jode), the painting by Both with Nicolaes Berchem appearing at Sotheby’s New York the 08.06.2007 (lot. 211), the drawing after Both at the Pushkin Museum in Moscow, inv./cat.nr 7635.
