Anonymous, after Giovanni Battista Luraghi (1675-1736)

[Antique print; etching, The Hague] Tempel opgericht voor het huis van de keizerlijke ambassadeur te Den Haag…, published 1716.

Temple erected in June 1716 in front of the home of the imperial ambassador Arnold baron von Heems in The Hague in honor of the birth on April 13, 1716 of the young Archduke Leopold Johan (Ook Leopold Jan van Oostenrijk). The celebrations lasted three days, from the 1st to the 3rd of June. Unfortunately, the crown prince died when he was only six months old.

The building extension is decorated with allegorical figures, weapons and banners. On the left, a representation of the temple as seen from the right and left sides, designed by Giovanni Battista Luraghi. From above the central panel two putti pouring liquid from the horns they’re holding. The liquid must have been wine, as several people came running with buckets to get some for free.

With the address of the publisher: “tot Amsterdam gedrukt by Wilhelmus Engelbert Koning.”; signed on the bottom left: “Johannes Baptista Luraghi inventor et devigit.” The last verb, as suggested by Ad Stijnman, must derive from the Latin “vegeo, vegere” meaning “to set in movement” which does reflect the motion in the print. The temporary temple, therefore, was an actual machine, provided with a mechanism which would allow the pouring of the wine.

Above the title, a French description of the numbered details in the print.

On verso collector’s mark not in Lugt: “L.A. DE VRIES.”

Etching on paper; total: 430 x 546 mm; vertical crease in the middle, folds on the margins and on the corners especially; aging paper, yet very nice impression. Muller 3520.
