“In the vineyard of the Marquis Casali, which was accessed through a gate that opened onto Via di Porta San Sebastiano, numerous antique objects were discovered as early as the 17th century, as was the case in the entire surrounding archaeological area. At the beginning of the eighteenth century a large number of tombs from the Roman era were excavated in the vineyard: Pier Leone Ghezzi seems to refer to sepulchral monuments discovered in the year 1726 in those lands (Santolini Giordani 1989, p. 63) in his tables with the prospect of a columbarium, architectural details and plan of this (Ghezzi 1731, plates XXXV, XXXVIII; 1426/33 and 1426/36). The excavation campaigns in the Casali vineyard, made known by the antiquarian Ficoroni who was an active protagonist, then resumed around 1730 (see Ficoroni 1732, pp. 47 et seq.) and lasted for some years; in 1746 that “magnificent room” was discovered with large niches decorated with grotesques and stuccoes, immediately demolished, which Piranesi documented in the Antichità in the number of objects arranged on shelves already observed for the fragments and inscriptions of the major sepulchral chamber of the Arrunzi […]” (Giovanna Scaloni, ICG, Rome)
