Plate XVIII from the II out of four volumes collection Le Antichità Romane collecting plates by Giovanni Battista Piranesi, firstly published by Angelo Rotili in Rome between 1756 and 1757. The second edition appeared in 1784. Original wide margins, no traces of binding or folding. Title within the illustration plate, description on another plate below.

Signed on the bottom right: ‘Piranesi Architetto dis. ed inc.’ .

“These three tables [XVII, XVIII and XIX] show some fragments and inscriptions found in the sepulchral chamber discovered in 1736 not far from that of the Arrunzi, as well as the metal nails used to better fix the inscriptions of the deceased embedded in the plaster to the wall, below the respective niches. As can be seen, the inscriptions bear the names of individuals belonging to different families. […].” (Mariasole Garacci, ICG, Rome)

Etching with some interventions in burin on hand laid paper, with broad margins; plate mark: 442 x 484 mm;  text plate: 44 x 482 mm; total 550 x 805 mm; damp stains on the right and bottom margins, some tiny holes within plate, somewhat frayed end margins with some rubbing, otherwise in great condition.
