Jan Caspar Philips (1680/1700-1775)

[Antique print, etching and engraving] Solomon writing the Book of Wisdom/De wijsheid van Salomo, published 1744.

Solomon seated at a table, looking back at a mirror held by a personification of Wisdom with a flame on her head. On the right the bad people of the world. From what Solomon sees in the mirror he writes his ‘Book of Wisdom’ (De wijsheid van Salomo). The scene on the right might point to the building of the Temple by Solomon. Jesus will then wipe the money changers out from the Temple.

Signed and dated at bottom: ‘J.C. Philips inv. et fecit 1744’.

Engraving and etching on laid paper with broad margins; plate mark: 90 x 157 mm, total: 212 x 272 mm; some soil along the margins, slightly affecting the plate on the top right corner.
