after Cornelis Elandts (1641-1687)

[Antique print; etching and engraving, Rijswijk] RYSWYCK, published between 1681-1735.

View of Huis ter Nieuburch in Rijswijk (Voormalige Huis ter Nieuburch (Nieuwburg) in Rijswijk), seen from the North-East. In 1697, in this palace was signed the Treaty of Rijswijk. Neglected for a long time, the palace was destroyed in 1789.

Titled above on a ribbon: ‘RYSWYCK’.

Within the framing engraving is the dedication: ‘All’Illustrissimo, & Eccellentissimo S. PIETRO GARZONI, Savio Grande, Storiografo Pibblico.’ It refers to the Venetian Pietro Garzoni (1645-1735) who published a History of Venice and actively participated to the political life in Venice.

The central impression is a copy after the 1681 etching by Cornelis Elandts (1641-1687) designed to be on the margin of a large map of The Hague from 1681-1682. See the Rijksmuseum copy with bibliographic indications: RP-P-OB-76.677. This copy was probably used as plate in an unknown publication as on the top left corner is inscribed: ‘II, 13a’; on the top right corner, in pen and ink is the number ‘131.’

Etching and engraving on paper, two plates in one sheet; internal plate: 125 x 180 mm, external plate: 252 x 331 mm, total: 263 x 343 mm; on 18th century laid paper; some smudges on the bottom right corner and bottom margin, otherwise in very good condition. Not in Muller [copy of 2967].
