From a set of eight plates, representing scenes of herding after Berchem. Here, at center, a farrier shoeing a donkey: he kneels at the hind of the animal and is about to hammer a nail into the foot held by another man; some pliers lie on the ground nearby; at left is a ruined building with an arched entrance and open wooden gate. On verso, collector’s mark of Justus Hiddes Halbertsma (1789-1869) [L. 1473].
Etching and engraving on paper, trimmed within plate mark; total: 249 x 343 mm; state I/3 or 4; some staining and traces of backing on verso; number ’15’inscribed in pen and ink in old handwriting. Hollstein 107, Wess. 136.
