Portrait of Margaret II, Countess of Holland and Hainault; whole-length standing against an architectural background with a scene from her life, wearing a dress and a veiled crown, a shield on her right shoulder.

Within decorated frame with flowers, musical instruments (harp, lyre, lute, cornett, horn, viola da gamba among others) and vanitas motifs (a skull in the bottom foreground).

Illustration used in François Halma’s “Toneel der Vereenigde Nederlanden, en onderhoorige landschappen.”

Titled below, within the portrait-plate: “MARGARETA” and in pen and ink: “Jaar na Christ: 1346”, in 18th or 19th century handwriting. Date of publishing 1725, by Hendrick Halma in Leeuwarden.

Etching and engraving on paper, two plates; interior plate: 234 x 161 mm, external plate: 337 x 250 mm, in very fine condition, despite few scribbling on verso. Interesting impression.
