[Antique print, etching and engraving] COUTUME observée à SCHERMERHORN à la PENTECOTE, published ca. 1733.

Sheet with three scenes with traditional appointments in the Netherlands around Pentecost and Epiphany. Above: on Whitsun in Schermerhorn a girl (the Pentecostblom or Pentecost bride) is carried around by four other girls. On the bottom left: in The Hague, girls decorated with flowers go door-to-door at Pentecost to collect money. On the bottom right: on Three Kings Eve in Amsterdam, people go door-to-door singing with the star of the three kings.

Each of the scene is titled: ‘COUTUME observée à SCHERMERHORN à la PENTECOTE / COUTUME de la PENTECOTE a la HAYE / L’ETOILE des ROIS promenee dans AMSTERDAM’.

Signed on the bottom left corner: ‘B. Picart del.’

This print was used as illustration in Picart’s: ‘Ceremonies et coutumes religieuses de tous les peuples du monde (…). Vol. 3 (1733), after p. 352.

Etching and engraving on paper, with some margin; plate mark: 343 x 216 mm, total: 387 x 243 mm; some smudges on the margins, otherwise in great condition. Muller 3999 [a].
