Andreas Kohl (1624-1657)
[Antique print, engraving] The arms of the family Pfinzing-Grundlach: Patriae et Amicis (familiewapen), published before 1657.
Beautiful allegorical representation of the coat of arms of the family Pfinzing-Grundlach, used as ex-libris (!).
Elaborated architectural design around the coat of arms. Inscribed at the top: ‘Patriae et Amicis.’
At the bottom is an empty cartouche, probably to be filled in by hand.
Signed on the bottom right: ‘AK sculps.’
On the verso, collector’s mark of Charles William Sherborn (1831-1912) [L.648]. He was famous for his engraved ex-libris; he collected about 430 (his almost complete collection is now at the British Museum). He also worked on oil and watercolour. Sherborn had formed a small general collection of prints by Dürer, van Dijck, Rembrandt, & c. The 500 pieces that composed it included engravings, etchings, mezzotints, woodcuts, aquatints, etc. ; they had been collected mainly for the purpose of study and help in his own work.
According to a note with the print, this ex-libris belonged also to the collection of the Prince Pfinzing von Henfenfeld.
