Portrait of doctor Francq van Berkhey, behind a window opening with a curtain, tree branch, the sky and the horizon in the background. His left elbow resting on the windowsill; in the left hand between the thumb and forefinger, he is holding a leaf. On the windowsill are a bird’s nest with eggs, a pan flute and a pen, a sheet of paper with an image of a swan, a medal, and an inkwell with a quill pen. His hair is combed back, medium length, with curls over the ears and at the nape of the neck, beardless, loose collar, wide coat.

Inscribed: JOHANNES LE FRANCQ VAN BERKHEY, / Medicinae Doctor. / Schryver der NATUURLYKE HISTORIE VAN HOLLAND. / Gebooren te LEYDEN den 23 January 1729. Signed and dated: H. Pothoven ad viv. delin. 1771 / J. Houbraken sculps. 1771.

Used as illustration in J. le Francq van Berkhey, ‘Verheerlijkt Leijden, bij het Tweede Eeuwgetijde van deszelfs heughlijk ontzet in den jare 1574. In dichtmaat uitgesproken in de Gasthuiskerk dier stad, op den 4den van Wijnmaand 1774, Leiden 1774.

[NL] Portret ten halven lijve naar links van Johannes le Francq van Berkhey, in een architectonische omlijsting, zijn linkerarm rustend op een plint. Daaronder zijn naam en gegevens in vier regels in het Nederlands. Op de plint een vogelnestje en schrijfgerei, in zijn hand een blaadje.
