Mary Magdalene, half figure kneeling in front of the Bible; a vase on the left and a skull on the right; on the right background the Magdalene kneeling at the feet of the cross; signed and dated on the bottom left: ‘Henricus Goltzius / inuen. & sculp. / Imprime a Haerlem / 1582’, (r in Haerlem superimposed).

Ab van der Steur suggested: ‘inspired by one of Titians Magdalens, probably via an engraving by C. Cort (Hollstein 143) and with Lucas van Leydens influence.’

Engraving on paper, trimmed within plate mark, oval; total: 173 x 132 mm; state I/2; traces of old mounting on the verso, small damage on the right border, yellowed paper; New Hollstein 49, Bartsch 57.
