St John in the desert; John the Baptist sitting besides a lamb at centre left, woody landscape and shallow water; after Gillis d’Hondecoeter; from a series of 130 engravings (plus title-page) forming a Picture Bible. Set: Figures of the Bible, in wich almost every history of the Holy Scriptures is discribed (Royal-Size Bible).

Lettered with production details, in lower left corner of the margin: Gillis Dehondecoutre Inventor / CIViβcher excudit, and in lower right corner of the margin: Johannes a Londerselius Schul.

Lettered in the lower margin with two columns each containing one line of Latin verse: Vox ego sum clamans pastus Baptista locustis, Sylvarumq[ue] favis, et amictus veste cameli.

[NL] Bosrijk moeraslandschap met Johannes de Doper, zittend onder een boom. In zijn linkerhand houdt Johannes een rieten kruis vast, naast hem ligt een lam. In de marge een onderschrift in Latijn. Set: Bybelsche figuren, vertonende de voornaemste historien der Heylige Schrifture (Heilige schrift). Antieke tekening door Jan van Londerseel.

Engraving on laid paper, with margins; total: 428 x 525 mm; folding vertical crease at center framing lines drawn in red ink within plate mark; traces of handling, slightly cooked paper, some minor staining on the margins, overall in fair condition. Mounted in paper passepartout. Hollstein 29.
