Portrait of the silk merchant in Haarlem Sybrand Camaij, formerly identified as Matthijs Merwede van Clootwijk. The sitter turns his bust to the left, but gazing at the viewer.

Two verses in Italian below: ‘PIV TOSTO STAR MAI MARITATO / CHE SEGVITAR AMOR INGRATO’ which translates in: ‘It’s better to stay unmarried than to follow an ungrateful love forever’; signed: ‘Joachimus Sand. delineabat ad vivum, / Regnerus A Persyn grati animi ergo amico sculpebat.’

On verso collector’s mark: Wilhelm Eduard Drugulin (1825-1879) L.2612.

Engraving on paper with small margins; plate mark: 224 x 175 mm, total: 233 x 179 mm; state II/2; light smudges, a brown stain on the right, a small rust stain on the hat, otherwise in very good condition. Hollstein 40, Wurzbach 4, van Someren 945, le Blanc 36.
