Cornelis van Dalen I (1602-1665), after Simon Jacobsz. de Vlieger (1600-1653), and after Willem van de Velde I (1610-1693)
[Antique portrait print, engraving] Maerten Harpertsz. Tromp (1598-1653) and the seabattles of Duinkerke and Duins, published 1640, 1 p.
Portrait of Maerten Harpertsz. Tromp (1598-1653), aged 42, in an oval, with two angels playing trumpets. Beyond the bells of the instruments is the inscription: ‘TROMP’.
Below the portrait is a bird’s-eye view of the naval battle at Duinkerke in which Admiral Tromp played a creditable role.
Inscribed around the frame: ‘M.H.TROMP L’ADMIRAEL VAN HOL-/LANDT EN WEST-VRIESLANDT. AET 42 / A. 1640.’ According to van Someren, this plate was modified in later years: the portrait was slightly changed according to the ageing of the sitter along with the figures of the age and date of publishing, namely 50 and 1648.
In this state, the plate shows inscriptions on the three views on the seabattles. On the left: ‘Slagh bij Duynkerken’, on the right: ‘t’In taghen in Duyns’, at bottom: ‘Slagh Int wt loopen van Duyns.’.
Artists signature on either sides of the portrait”: ‘S. D. Vlieger pinx. / Cornelis van Dale scul.’ On the bottom left corner, on a piece of wood floating on the water: ‘V. Velde.’
