Houbraken, Jacobus (1698-1780) after Troost, Cornelis (1696-1750)
[Antique etching and engraving, ca 1750] Het Amsterdamsche Kermis Feest. / Divertissement de la Foire d’ Amsterdam, published ca 1750, 1 p.
Representation of some happenings at the Amsterdam fair: some children dressed up as soldiers are marching in front of some houses along the canals. A woman runs out of a house quite angry holding one of the children by hand while pointing at another woman who is helping a child to urinate. The parade of children is quite animated: in the very foreground two of them are fighting, towards the right one is concentrated in playing a side drum, on the left one is crying and another is puking while others are contending flags to each other. Letered on the bottom in Dutch and French: ‘HET AMSTERDAMSCHE KERMIS FEEST / de Origineele Teekening is berustende in ‘t Cabinet / van den Heer D. Neyman. Signed on the bottom left: ‘C. Troost del.’ and on the right:’J. Houbraken fec.’
