Adam and Eve standing on either sides of the tree of knowledge in the Eden Garden. The Devil, embodied in a serpent with the upper part in the shape of a bare-breasted woman, with wings, hanging from the tree. On the let and on the right some scenes from the life of the progenitors after their fall.

Signed at bottom: Iodocus a Winghe in / Theodore de Bry fe.

Firstly employed as frontispiece to de Bry’s India Occidentalis (1591).

For the design of the text on the verso, this page might come from either the 1592 or the 1605 edition of AMERICAE TERTIA PARS Memorabile[m] provinciae Brasiliae Historiam contene[n]s.

[NL] Adam en Eva staan aan weerszijden van de boom der kennis in de Hof van Eden. De duivel, belichaamd in een slang met het bovenste deel in de vorm van een vrouw met blote borsten, met vleugels, hangt aan de boom. Links en rechts enkele scènes uit het leven van de voorouders na hun val. Antieke prent gemaakt door Theodor de Bry (1528-1598) naar Joos van Winghe.
