Poetic description of public allegorical pageants celebrating the peace between England (UK) and the Dutch Republic. By the famous Amsterdam writer Jan Vos. It reflects how 17th century Amsterdam used theatre, myth and spectacle to express civic pride, political power and the triumph of peace over war.
Contemporary decorated paper binding with stars and flowers. Quarto edition, in -4. Complete copy. Titlepage with a tear in the middle left, not interfering the text. Handwritten on the titlepage after Engelandt = Westminster. Fingerprint: b1=*b2 A2 lank.
[NL] Jan Vos (ca 1612 -1667 Amsterdam) was een Nederlandse dichter, toneelschrijver en glaszetter (Glazemaker) van beroep. Hij organiseerde spektakels, optochten en toneel. Dit exemplaar bevat een gedicht of serie vertoningen die in opdracht van de burgemeesters van Amsterdam werden opgevoerd op de markt van Amsterdam ter gelegenheid van de Vrede tussen Engeland en de Nederlanden. Met thema’s oorlog, vrede, vrijheid, handel, zeemacht, opkomt van Nederland als vrije staat, symbolen uit de mythologie als Neptunus en Mercurius, allegorieen van tweedracht en eendracht. Brit en Batavier. Het stuk reflecteert op de internationale verhoudingen (Engeland-Nederland), de rol van Amsterdam als handelsstad, de viering van de vrede en hoe men die vrede symbolisch wilde markeren.
Opgedragen aan Frans Banning Kok, Cornelis Bikker = Bicker, Joan Huidekooper en Nicolaas Tulp (Nikolaas Tulp), de toen regerende burgemeesters van de stad Amsterdam.
