[Montanus, Arnoldus]

Ambassades memorables de la Compagnie des Indes Orientales des Provinces Unies, vers les empereurs du Japon. Amsterdam, J. v. Meurs, 1680.

Rare copy in French, published by the Amsterdam bookseller Jacob van Meurs in 1680, who died shortly before the publication in December 1679. One of the most important seventeenth-century descriptions of Japan, with splendid illustrations, i.a. the earliest known illustration of the isle of Decima. As early as 1664 Meurs already received the privilege to publish both a Dutch and French edition of the Gedenkwaerdige gesantschappen der Oost-Indische Maetschappy […] aen de Kaisaren van Japan. The Dutch edition was published in 1669, shortly afterwards followed by translations in German (published by Van Meurs) and English (published in London with Van Meurs’ plates). The French edition, however, was delayed until 1680. Presumably the translation got under way after the peace of 1678.
