Almanach for the year 1813 with calender, engravings of famous paintings with explication: Les bergers d’Arcadie by N. Poussin, La Madeleine by A Vend-Werff, le concert champetre by Giogione, Apollon et Daphne by Albane, Payage by J. van Ostade and Les apprets du jugement de Paris by C. Poelkenburg. Thereafter the almanac text and at the end empty pages for notes with for every month an engraving.
Beautiful contemporary gilt calf binding with moroccan letterpiece on spine, guilt decorations on front and back and inside. Spine with elaborate red gilt floral ornaments and distinctive onlaid red and black morocco quatrefoils. The boards are framed with elegant gilt roll borders. Board edges and turn-ins are also decorated in gilt. Decorative example of fine early nineteenth-century French binding craftsmanship. Duodecimo format, in -12, 12 x 8 cm.
Provenance: Pasted in exlibris of Carlo De Poortere (Kortrijk, 21 maart 1917 – 24 oktober 2002). He was the son of tapestry maker Louis De Poortere and Gabrielle Buyschaert, co-owner of family business ‘Tapijten Louis De Poortere’, collector and bibliophile with a library with mainly only 17th and 18th century bookbindings.
