Frans Hogenberg (1539/40-1590)

[Antique etching, ets, history print] F. Hogenberg, Anjou takes the oath to the city of Antwerp, published before 1600.

Festive entry of Anjou to Antwerp, February 22, 1582. The duke takes the oath to the city of Antwerp on a podium in front of the town hall. In the square a cart with allegorical figures. At the bottom, a caption of 10 lines in German: “Der aller Konig hertzen wegt…” and 2 lines in French: “Le Duc.. Anno D[omi]ni 1582. le 22 feb.” Numbered: 48. From Series 8: “Nederlandse Gebeurtenissen, 1577-1583”.

Etching on paper trimmed close to plate mark, mounted on another sheet of paper; total: 202 x 273 mm; in very good condition. some staining and annotations on the mount. Frans Hogenberg: broadsheets, p. 106, B176-IV, Frederik Muller p. 50, nr. 413/223.
