[Original etching] A brooding hen [set: Diversae avium species]/Broedende hen, ca 1658.

From a set of prints presenting birds, here is a hen with his chicks in a landscape. Other birds on the tree and a swan on the water. Signed at bottom, to the left: ‘F. Barlow inv., W. Hollar fecit’.

On verso collectors’marks: Gustav Friedrich Konstantin Parthey (1798-1872) (L. 2014), the famous collector of Hollar.

On verso also a skech of a profile in red ink.

Etching on laid paper, trimmed within plate mark; total: 128 x 186 mm; state I/2 (?); tiny tears repairs on the sides, a light brown stain on the wing of a bird on the tree; traces of previous mounting on verso. Pennington 2129.
