Contemporary full calf leather with gilt ornamented spine and covers, red morocco title shield. Both hinges partly broken. 4o: , xxxii, 304, , 305-310 pp. With engr. portrait on the titlepage by W. Bollinger, and 11 folding engraved plates. Good copy with a manuscript dedication. First edition of the author’s pioneer work which established the science of acoustics. The first complete historical text on the subject, this work extended his earlier observations (1787) to include vibrating ellipses, semicircles, triangles, and six-sided polygons. This copy of Chladni’s masterpiece was a present given in 1812 to the Haarlem schoolmaster P.J. Prinsen by the father of his pupil Carl Gottfried Voorhelm Schneevoogt.B0141.
